Join Joshua Smelter, a former litigator from the Department of Justice Tax Division, for this presentation on what CPAs should know about the taxation of settlements & judgements. Joshua discusses

  • the legal standards applied to determine whether a settlement or judgment is fully or partially excluded from income
  • whether it is a deductible trade or  business expense or can be treated as capital gain or ordinary income.

The presentation will include real world examples, practical tips, and guidance on how to both recognize and handle the close calls.

Course Objective(s): Attendees will understand the taxation of settlements & judgements to better assist their clients.

 

Prerequisites: The method of presentation is online instruction and the program level is basic to intermediate.  There are no prerequisites for this course nor is there any advanced preparation required.
