Director of Financial Accounting

Under the guidance of the CFO, this position is responsible for managing the general accounting functions for a multi-disciplined professional services organization. The position will be responsible for directing and managing the daily activities of the support staff responsible for financial accounting and analysis; accounting functions are performed in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or other relevant standards; and supporting the annual audit process as well as the tax preparation activities of outside professionals.


  • Guides financial decisions by monitoring and upholding policies and procedures
  • Fosters a work environment that promotes a team approach to fulfilling the Company’s accounting needs; provides guidance, coaching and training to direct reports and colleagues
  • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring and adhering to internal controls
  • Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting internal reviews and facilitates the work of the outside auditors and tax specialists
  • Prepares budgets under the guidance of the CFO by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data and recommending plans that meet the direction of management
  • Provides status of financial condition by interpreting and reporting financial data in the monthly financial package
  • Prepares requested special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends
  • Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by maintaining a knowledge of existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; adhering to requirements; filing financial reports and advising management on needed actions
  • Assists in maintaining the financial staff by selecting, orienting and training employees
  • Protects operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and CPA designation
  • At least 10 years' experience of demonstrated, progressively responsible experience within an organization of similar size and scope of work; experience with an engineering, real estate or a professional service company is preferred
  • Solid understanding of accounting principles and pronouncements
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications and QuickBooks; experience with integrated operational and accounting systems is preferred
  • Proven ability and desire to lead a team of accounting and technical staff
  • Experience with integrated operational and accounting systems
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills to gain the confidence of clients within and outside the Company
  • Time management and prioritizing skills to meet deadlines and flexibility with changing priorities
